Hey adventure seekers and waterfall lovers!

There's nothing quite like the call of a hidden cascade, especially when it involves exploring a newly reopened section of our beloved national forest. Today, we're taking you on a journey to the stunning Slick Rock Falls in Pisgah National Forest, and we're tackling the recently reopened Forest Road 475B (Headwaters Road) to get there!

This is fantastic news for anyone who loves exploring the more secluded corners of the forest. FR 475B has been closed for a while due to hurricane damage, but now it's back, offering a direct (and scenic!) route to this beautiful waterfall.

The Adventure Begins: Navigating to Slick Rock Falls

Slick Rock Falls is a gem – a roughly 35-foot cascade that slides gracefully over a smooth, curved rock face. It’s perfect for a quick escape into nature. Here’s how to find it:

Step 1: The Paved Approach on US-276 & FR 475

  1. Start on US-276 (Forest Heritage Byway): From the intersection of US-276 and US-64 in Brevard, head north on US-276 for about 5 miles. This stretch is incredibly scenic, so enjoy the drive!
  2. Turn onto Forest Road 475: Keep an eye out for signs directing you to the Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education and the State Fish Hatchery. You'll turn left onto Forest Road 475 here.
  3. Continue on FR 475: Drive for approximately 1.5 miles on this paved road, passing the Fish Hatchery on your left.

Step 2: The Reopened Forest Road 475B (Headwaters Road)

  1. Turn onto Forest Road 475B: After about 1.5 miles on FR 475, you'll see a sign for Forest Road 475B (Headwaters Road) on your right. This is your turn!
  2. Embrace the Gravel: This is where the adventure truly begins! FR 475B is an unpaved, one-lane gravel road. It's just reopened, so expect some bumpy sections and potentially some remaining rough patches from the repairs.
    • Pro Tip for Driving: Drive slowly and cautiously. Keep an eye out for oncoming traffic, as pull-off areas are sometimes tight. While many vehicles can manage it, higher clearance is a definite bonus on roads like this.
  3. Drive for 1.1 Miles: You'll follow FR 475B for about 1.1 miles. Enjoy the feeling of being deeper in the forest!

Step 3: Parking and the Short Hike

  1. Parking Spot: After about 1.1 miles on FR 475B, you'll encounter a sharp left curve. Just on the outside of this curve, you'll find a small, somewhat discreet pull-off parking area on the right. You might even hear the falls from here!
  2. Trailhead: Look for a small informational bulletin board near the parking area. This marks the unofficial trailhead.
  3. The Quick Walk: The hike to Slick Rock Falls is incredibly short – we're talking a minute or two! Follow the path a few yards and take the right fork at the split. In moments, you'll be greeted by the beauty of the falls.

Experience Slick Rock Falls

Slick Rock Falls is a truly picturesque spot. The water glides down a broad, moss-kissed rock face, creating a peaceful and serene atmosphere. Depending on recent rainfall, the flow can vary from a gentle trickle to a powerful curtain of water.

A Crucial Safety Note: It's not called "Slick Rock" for nothing! The rocks around the base of the falls are extremely slippery, especially when wet. Please wear appropriate footwear with good grip and exercise extreme caution if you venture close to the water's edge.
